Abstract

This research aimed to investigate whether the use of Macromedia Flash 8
was more effective than white board media on teaching simple past tense to the first
grade students of SMAN 2 Sintang.This research is classified as a quasi-experimental study. The population of this research were 257 students of tenth
grade, and the samples were 74 students. The class which chosen as the
Experimental Group was taught using Macromedia Flash 8 as the treatment while
Class which chosen as the Control Group was taught using white board media that
the teacher uses every teaching. In the beginning of the study, both of Experimental
and Control Groups were given a pre-test to measure the student’s initial simple
past tenses mastery in the form of a multiple-choice consisting of 25 questions and
post-test was given after the treatments.
The mean score of pre-test in the experiment and control class was 59.24 and
63.78. While the mean score of post-test in the experiment and control class was
74.81 and 69.08. From the result of pre-test and post-test score in the experiment
and control class indicate that the application of Macromedia Flash 8 can affect
students’ simple past tense mastery. Whereas, from the result of the mean score of
pre-test and post-test in the experiment and control classes there was differences in
the simple past tense mastery between first grade students of SMAN 2 Sintang who
were taught using Macromedia Flash 8 anD who were taught using white board
media.
