Abstract

This research aimed to find out the factors that influence, and teachers' strategies to improve students’ self-confidence in speaking skills to the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Tumbang Titi in the Academic Year 2021/2022. This research was descriptive survey research with quantitative methods. There were 38 tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Tumbang Titi participated in the collected primary data. The
proposed research used direct methods and direct communication, techniques with questionnaires and interviews as tools. The closed-ended questionnaire consisted of
20 questions related to four Likert scales. In calculated data and managed graphs, the researcher operated Ms. Excel 2013 for measurement of the frequency and percentage of data. From the results of the questionnaire, we can see that the factors that influence student self-confidence such as lack of self-confidence 59%, lack of motivation 72%, shyness 61%, fear of making mistake 74%, anxiety 59%. Then from
these results, the findings stated that the most dominant factor caused that influences students' self-confidence in speaking skill is Fear of making mistakes with a percentage (74%). Then, based on the results of the interview with an English teacher, it can be concluded that to improve students' self-confidence in speaking English, the teacher applied four strategies which is consisted of Conversation
Strategies, Storytelling, Task Repetition, and Presentation
