Abstract

This study was to find out the level of students’ reading
anxiety and what factors cause the students’ reading anxiety. This research was conduct using qualitative descriptive study, and the data collection techniques used are direct communication and indirect communication. The data collection tools in this study used online questionnaire and interview. To analyze the questionnaire data, the researcher used quantitative techniques to process
the results of filling out the results, and to analyze interview data, the researcher used qualitative technique to process the results of interview transcripts. To find the level of students’ reading anxiety is divided into five categories, namely Nervousness and worry associated with imperfect text comprehension, Negative and pessimistic beliefs about reading, Lack of enjoyment or self-confidence in reading, Unwillingness to demonstrate one’s linguistic skill, Reliance on first language (L1) in FL reading. and to determine the level of students' reading anxiety there are three categories, namely high, medium, and low. Meanwhile, in terms of the factors causing students’ reading anxiety, there are divided into five categories, namely unfamilar culture, unfamilar topic, unfamiliar vocabulary, worry about reading effect, fear of making error. Based on the results of research related to the level of student reading anxiety, it shows that the level of reading anxiety in the second semester students of the English education study program is included in the medium category, in the sense that the level of anxiety is fairly reasonable because although it is not low, it is not high either. and related to the results of the students' reading anxiety factor, the results of the study found that there were five factors that caused reading anxiety in students, but there were two factors that were the most dominant of the five other indicators in this study, namely worry about the Reading Effect and fear of making errors.
