Abstract

This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy in teaching the students’ vocabulary mastery to the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Walisongo in the academic year of 2016/2017.
The design of this study was pre-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest design. The sample was chosen by using cluster random sampling technique and the researcher got A class of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Walisongo. Moreover, the technique to collect the data was measurement. Then, the tool of collecting data was vocabulary test.
It was found that Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy was effective in teaching the students’ vocabulary mastery to the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Walisongo in the academic year of 2016/2017. It can be seen based on the researcher finding proven the value of t-test was 18.587which was bigger than the number of t-table 2.032 in the area of paired sample in 5% of 34 degree of freedom which meant Ho was rejected. In addition, graphic organizer had big effect for teaching vocabulary mastery.
It can be concluded that the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy was effective. The researcher suggests a English teacher may use Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy as an alternative method in teaching vocabulary mastery
