Abstract

The researcher focused on the use of talking sticks to improve the speaking skills of grade seven students in one of the junior high schools in Banyuke Hulu. Classroom Action Research (CAR) is conducted in the classroom to improve and enhance the teaching and learning process in the classroom.
Ferrance (2006:6) defines that "classroom action research is a reflective process that allows for inquiry and discussion, researchers collaborate with teachers and discussion, researchers collaborate with other teachers into a team that works together to overcome problems faced by teachers and students".
The researcher found an increase in students' speaking scores based on data obtained from the results of measuring students' speaking exams in the second cycle. Although there were still some students who fell into the average category, their scores showed an improvement since the first cycle. In the first cycle the students' average score was 60, while in the second cycle the students' average score was 70. Based on the discussion in chapter IV which has been carried out by researcher in two cycles. The results showed that the improvement of students' speaking skills was quite significant after students got the Talking Sticks technique. It can be seen from the comparison of scores between cycle 1
getting the highest score of 65 while in the second cycle getting a score of 75. Learning to speak through the technique can also make students active in the teaching and learning process. Students pay more attention to the lessons and instructions from the teacher in the teaching and learning process. The shows that Talking Sticks technique can improve students' speaking skills. Talking Sticks
technique can make students become active and pay more attention in following the lesson, because this technique is effective, active and creates fun learning. The technique can also increase students' thinking power to further develop the material provided and create cooperation between students.
