Abstract

This study aims to find out the problems faced by students in learning English at SMA Negeri 01 Nana Pinoh and the causes of problems in speaking English. This study uses a descriptive design with quantitative research techniques.
All eleventh grade students became the study population, and the research sample was taken using a purposive sampling technique. The sample selected was eleventh grade Social Sciences 2 with a total sample of 30 students. In data collection, the questionnaire was adapted from Brier & lia dwi jayanti (2020) and Ayu Nadila , Fadly Azhar (2021). As a result, data about students' problems and causes were collected using a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics assessed using excel 2016 are used by researchers to analyze the data collected. Based on the results of the percentage of sample frequency, 62% of students have problems with pronunciation, 55% vocabulary is the same as fluency, namely 55%. 93% nothing to say and the last 56% for use mother
tongue.
