Abstract

This research aimed to describe the Students’ Perceptions of English Songs as Media for Listening Skill. This research used a descriptive research design. To obtain the data, the researcher used indirect communication techniques and direct communication techniques, there were questionnaire and interviews as tools of data collection. The subject of this research was Students’ Eight Grade at SMPN 16 Pontianak. To analyze the data, researcher uses a mixed method approach from the results of questionnaire and thematic analysis from the results of the interview.
The main finding in this study was the students are like listening to English songs and their thought that English songs is a good media for improve their listening skills. They also find it a fun media if the teacher uses it in the
classroom. While the factors that influence students perception come from external side which is their environmental where the English songs are often heard
so they get used to English song. Moreover, the internal factor comes from their interest on English songs.
Therefore, the student’s perception of English song as media for listening skill has good perception. Students believe that English songs is a good media, fun and has a good impact on their listening skill. This finding is in line with study conducted by Sekeon et al. (2022) that explained the majority of the students agreed with the assertions that using English songs can help students improve their listening skills. While the factor that influence student’s perceptions of English song the most is from their own interesting on English songs.
