Abstract

This study aims to find out what are the difficulties in reading comprehension in second semester students of English education study program at IKIP PGRI Pontianak Academic Year 2021/2022. This research is in the form of a quantitative descriptive. The data collection technique is a combination of indirect and direct methods. In this study, 26 participants were used to fill out the questionnaire and 5 participants were interviewed. Data on students' difficulties in reading comprehension were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The factor that causes students to have difficulty in reading comprehension is not mastering vocabulary because many words are rarely heard and students are not asked to read. In addition, students also admitted that they had difficulty making English reading texts because they were still confused about using grammar. This shows that students are lazy to try to arrange words in English so that this is the cause of students having difficulty reading English comprehension. The findings of this study indicate that students have difficulty in all of
four aspects, namely Determining the main idea is the most difficult aspect faced by students with a difficulty percentage of 78.85%. Followed by vocabulary understanding which got 69.95%. For students' difficulty in making conclusions and detailed information, the percentage of difficulty is 74.52% and 76.45% which is only a difference of two percent. Based on this phenomenon, it can be concluded that on average, second semester students of English study programs often experience difficulties in reading comprehension.
