Abstract

This descriptive research was conducted to find out how well the students in mastering simple present tense and to find out students’ difficulties in mastering simple present tense. The population of this study was all eleventh�grade students SMPN 15 Pontianak and the sample was consisted 15 students.
The sample was selected using cluster-simple random sampling.The methode was in this research was used descriptive research. The technique data collection technique used in this study was the measurement technique and interview. The purpose of the measurement was to determine the students’ level of mastering simple present tense, and the purpose of the interview was to know the students’ difficulties in mastering simple present tense. Tools in this research used a grammar test and interview guide.
The results of data analysis showed that there were still many students who were fair in mastering the simple present tense. The result of the test showed that 20% of students were good in mastering simple present tense, 47% of students were fair in mastering simple present tense, and 33% of students were poor in mastering simple present tense. The result of interview showed that the major of the problems that caused students being difficult in mastering simple
present was limited in vocabulary.
