Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out factors contributes the students’ reluctance to participate in English class and dominant factor contributes the students’ reluctance to participate in English class to the eighth grade of SMPN 12 Pontianak in the academic year of 2018/2019.
The design was a descriptive research as qualitative and quantitative research or called as mix method research. It examined a sample of a class with purposive sampling technique was used to take the sample and it was VIII B. The researcher was conducted at SMPN 12 Pontianak. The population was all of eighth grade students in the academic year of 2018/2019 and the sample chosen was VIII B consisted of 34 students.
The technique of data collection applied in this research was questionnaire and interview. The data were collected through questionnaire and analyzed by quantitative form using Ms. Excel 2013 and SPSS 21, and interview analyzed by using qualitative form using data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification.
The result of this research based on these data collected showed the first question is completely answered by looking questionnaire findings. There are many factors that contribute the students’ reluctance to participate in English class such as anxiety, lack of motivation, fear of making mistake and lack of confidence. Then, the second question is dominant factor contribute to students’ reluctance to participate in English class. From the result of questionnaire and interview findings, it was clear that dominant factor contribute to students reluctance to participate in English class is lack of confident.
