Abstract

The Effectiveness of Using Magnet
Summaries to Teach Reading
Comprehension on Narrative text to the
Eight Grade Students of SMP
Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak.This research aimed to find out the effectiveness and how significant of
Magnet Summaries Strategy toward Students’ Reading Comprehension especially
in Narrative Text. This research is using a Pre-Experimental research. It was
conducted from March to April 2016 at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak it
involved Nineteen Students from class VIII C. This pre-experimental research
applied three treatment stages of using Magnet Summaries as the learning strategy
of the research. The instruments that used in this research are two reading tests
that mainly focus on narrative text that were applied during pretest and posttest.
Based on the finding of the research it was found out that the
implementation of Magnet Summaries strategy indeed gave effect toward
students’ reading comprehension. This can be seen from the result of post-test
based on the Paired Sample Test is sig lower than (p < 0.05) or (0.000 < 0.05) so
Ha accepted and the effect size from the treatment showed the value 2,40 is at
strong level. Therefore, it could be concluded that Magnet Summaries strategy is
effective to teach students’ reading comprehension especially in narrative text.
The researcher recommended this strategy as part of teaching reading
comprehension due to the effect size level and also due to limitation further
research is needed in order to gather more precise data and evidence of using
Magnet Summaries as a strategy in teaching reading comprehension.
