Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate listening comprehension problems and the listening comprehension strategies that students in listening activities. This research used a quantitative approach with a descriptive design using a closed questionnaire as a data collection tool. The subjects in this research were students of class A afternoon in the third semester of the English language
education study program at IKIP PGRI Pontianak for the academic year 2023/2024, totaling 30 samples. Data is collected using a questionnaire close�ended. The results showed that students experienced problems in the listening
comprehension process Listening comprehension problems and strategies show that listening is very difficult for students. This is based on seven indicators of listening comprehension problems including listening material, linguistic basis, listener concentration, physical characteristics, listener, speaker, and physical setting. The problems experienced by students are indicators of listening material, foreign words including jargon or idioms, linguistic characteristics, indicators of difficulty in obtaining detailed information, lack of concentration, distractions around, psychological characteristics, listeners, physical settings without transcripts, and varying accents and indicators of the speaker being students' problems in listening comprehension. The listening comprehension strategies used are based on three aspects cognitive, metacognitive, and socio-affective. Therefore, cognitive strategy students need to try to enjoy, metacognitive strategy, not worry and relax, focus on the text when they experience problems understanding, socio-affective by using words that are understood to help guess
the meaning by using an understanding of the main idea to guess the meaning. Cognitive strategies are the main strategies used by students to overcome problems in listening comprehension.
