Abstract

This research conducted to develop students‟ speaking ability at seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 19 Pontianak by Picture strip story activities. This research is related to the result of a preliminary research showed that the students have lack of response to the teacher's question concerning teaching and learning the Picture Strip Story. However, showed that they had little understanding of the
story. This research used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is conducted to solve the students‟ problem in English Speaking. The Classroom Action Research (CAR) was done based on Kemmis and Mc Taggart. The researcher did two cycles in which each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data were gathered through qualitative and
quantitative. The qualitative data were obtained through observation and field note. Then, quantitative data were obtained from the students‟ speaking score of the test.
Based on the research conducted in VII D class of SMP Negeri 19 Pontianak, it was found that Picture strip story activity could improve students‟ speaking ability. Furthermore, from the students‟ response toward the teaching and learning activity during CAR, it was proven that the response of the students toward the teacher professionalism and their interest in learning speaking using Picture strip story was 57.6% and 73.54% which fell into the strong and very strong category. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Picture strip story is effective in improving students speaking. Moreover, the students seemed braver and became more confident in speaking. It was seen from their participation in the class conversations, discussions, perform in the front of the class, pronunciation, fluency and feeling confident about speaking.
