Abstract

This study aims to analyze the students’ Learning Style in speaking for academic purpose course in IKIP PGRI Pontianak. The research questions that was answered in this study are: What are the dominant learning styles that are used by students and what are the less used learning styles by students. The subject for this study is student in the second year, especially third semester student.
This descriptive study applied an indirect communication technique co collect the data and a questionnaire as a tool. The questionnaire is adapted from Grasha-Riechmann learning style (GRLS) (Grasha & Riechmann, 1974) which consist of 30 positive statements with a 4-point Likert scale (degree of frequency) and then the questionnaire was distributed online. Data was collected and produces quantitative results. After the data was collected, it is analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics to describe what learning styles students are used, which are classified based on six indicators.
The results showed that the dependent mean score (m = 2.94) was most dominantly owned by students; followed by participant and collaborative learning styles with a mean score of m = 2.91 and m = 2.90 respectively. Independent learning style with the mean score m = 2.89 and then competitive learning style m = 2.73. Meanwhile, the least owned learning style is avoidant (m=2.64). In all learning styles, male students have a higher average than female students. Male students' dominant styles are collaborative, independent, and participant, whereas female students' dominant styles are dependent, participant, and independent. Based on the result, learning style that is dominantly used by students is dependent learning style.
