Abstract

This research aims to determine students' skills in developing written content and to determine the difficulties faced by students in writing descriptive texts. The sample in this research were students of class VIII MTS Nurul Jadid. This research emphasizes the importance of writing activities to hone students' skills.
The data collection technique used an indirect communication technique. Data collection was carried out using two instruments. The first instrument was a written text to determine students' skill to develop descriptive text content and the second instrument was a closed questionnaire consisting of 14 questions to determine the difficulties faced by students. In analyzing the data, researchers used a Quantitative Descriptive Method. The sample of this research was 15 students of grade VIII MTS Nurul Jadid.
The results of this research illustrated that students' skills in writing descriptive texts were good. The total average score in writing was 70.5 (ability was good and they experience some difficulties in writing rules in terms of punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary. Students need more development and practice in writing descriptive texts.
