Abstract

This systematic review aimed to review the previous studies related to genre-based approach to teaching writing to the university students. Thematic analysis used to review five published studies from year 2014-2020. Indirect observation employed which Google Scholar used as the bibliographic database and Zotero software as the tool to manage selected journals and present the detail of journals and abstract in order to guide the researcher to select the studies in study selection process. The discussion of the finding showed that students’ gain improvement through the implementation of genre-based approach teaching stages. The implementation of genre-based approach improved students writing in term of linguistics features, content and organization, ability in composing text, vocabulary, critical thinking and characters. The students also understood the social purpose of the text. Result gave evidence that genre-based approach had positive contribution to teaching writing. Through the proper implementation of genre-based approach teaching stages and learning strategies, students writing could be improved.
