Abstract

The purpose of this research was to see the reading interest of students of the English Education Study Program at IKIP PGRI Pontianak and explore the factors that influence student reading interest. In this research four classes in
semester 2 as research subjects consisted of 104 participating students. Then the researcher distributed questionnaires to 104 English Department students and took
7 students to be interviewed. To answer the first research question, questionnaire were distributed to determine students' reading interest. In addition to answering the second research question, the researcher used semi-structured interviews to find out the factors that influenced their interest. After collecting the data, the
results of the interviews were transcribed. The results of this research indicate that students have an interest in reading. This is also supported by the results of interviews. This can be seen from the aspect of fun, namely they admit that they enjoy reading, evidenced by students agree that reading is one of the most fun activity, even according to the research table students choose Disagree if they say they don't like the subject. Reading and from the habit of those who still used their free time to read about 10-15 minutes per day, although almost all of them prefer
to read horror, fantasy, romance genre books in the form of books or e-books that they get from the Internet. Only a small proportion of them read science textbooks which have many benefits. However, they will read if the lecturer gives them assignments. Furthermore, several factors that influence their interest in reading are: 1) awareness of the importance of reading, 2) motivation to read, 3) language,
4) availability of books in the library, 5) intensity of reading time, 6) perception 7) environment, 8) internet, and 9) learning system. Based on the research results, the researcher concluded that students must increase their interest in reading. In addition, lecturers can also help them to foster interest in reading by giving them several assignments that require a lot of references and reading a lot, asking them to make summaries.
