Abstract

This research aims to describe how the students‟ vocabulary mastery of student in SMP Negeri 1 mempawah in the academic year of 2021/2022. This research was conducted on grade 8 students consisting of 15 students. In this study, researchers used a descriptive qualitative method. In this study, researchers used a vocabulary mastery test consisting of 40 questions, in collecting data. From the test results, the researcher found that students' vocabulary mastery in grade 8 of SMP Negeri 1Mempawah Hulu on the indicator meaning of the average score obtained by students was 58.6% in the moderate category, in the spelling indicator the average score obtained by students was 54.6% in the moderate category, In the Grammatical Function Indicator, the average score obtained by students is 29.3% in the low category and in the Indicator Part of Speech the average score obtained by students is 23.3% in the low category. In addition to the description above, the researcher concluded that students' vocabulary mastery in the eighth grade is still low on grammatical function and part of speech indicators. Meanwhile, the meaning and spelling indicators are in the moderate category. Students need something different to
improve their vocabulary mastery. This time english subject in the class insist teacher give many exercises who gave the teacher always percieved the serious problem by students.
