This study aimed to find out the reading interest of the eleven grade students at SMA Hidayatul Muhsinin Pontianak during the post – pandemic era and explain the phenomena of reading interest during the post – pandemic era.
This study used both quantitative and qualitative approach with explanatory sequential mix method design as the design. This study employed the eleven grade students at SMA Hidayatul Muhsinin. In total 28 students were chosen by saturated sampling as the first phase sampling technique to obtain the quantitative data and 4 students with characteristic of high and low reading interest were chosen purposely to gather the qualitative data. A questionnaire was adapted from Utami & Nur (2020) and a set of interview questions used to obtain the data in this research. Afterwards, the researcher self – administered the
questionnaire and conducted the interview with a focus group discussion technique. The data from the questionnaire was analyzed with descriptive statistic which was frequency. Meanwhile, the interview results were analyzed with content analysis suggested by Miles & Hubberman (1994).
In this current’s study the researcher found out that the students’ reading interest at SMA Hidayatul Muhsinin was considerably lack during the post – pandemic era. The students thought that reading is a hard and boring activity
which led some of the students even dare to not sparing their time to read. They read only 15 – 30 minutes a day, 1 – 2 days a week and only 1 – 3 books within five months. The students were also found to be more into fiction book or any
other entertainment books rather than reading learning material. In regard of the students’ reading material source, the researcher found that the students mostly got the reading material from both online and offline sources. The type of material that was mostly read by the students were manga, comic, humor, romance, novel, & note of learning material. Regarding to the explanation of how the students
reading interest during post – pandemic era. The students admitted that they were not really into reading as much as during the pandemic era. After the post – pandemic era system was announced, all of the students admitted that they tend to spend their time outside, such as playing with friends, hanging out, or chilling at a café. This study suggested that both the learner and teacher to be more aware
about the important of reading and starting to improve the reading activities.
