Abstract

This study aims to determine what strategies are used by students in learning English vocabulary. The subject of this research is the second semester students of class B afternoon of the English Education Study Program IKIP PGRI
Pontianak. The sample was selected using purposeful sampling. The researcher used descriptive research mixed data. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. Data from questionnaires and interviews were categorized into five categories, namely determination strategies, cognitive strategies, social strategies, memory strategies, and metacognitive strategies. The results of data analysis showed that the strategy most used by students was metacognitive strategy and the strategy that least used was social strategy.
