Abstract

The objective of this research was to find what are the students’ motivation in learning English. The research was conducted by using descriptive quantitative research method. This research was carried out at SMK PGRI Pontianak. The subject of this research was the tenth grade students of SMK PGRI Pontianak which consisted of 20 students. The research collected the data through online quesionnare consist of 10 questions that divided into instrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
The results of this research found that students have higher intrinsic motivation than extrinsic motivation in learning English. The average of the total mean score of instrinsic motivation was 3,84 categorized as high motivational level. Meanwhile the average of the total mean score of extrinsic motivation was 3,48 categorized as high motivational level. The intrinsic motivation actually gets a higher mean score of 52% when compared to the mean score of extrinsic motivation with a percentage of 48%. The reason that intrinsic motivation was more dominant than extrinsic motivation was none other than because of the statements that the researcher tested to the respondents were statements that really motivated respondents to learn English. Meanwhile, the thing that makes extrinsic motivation less popular was because of the statements in this element does not really motivated respondents to learn English.
This results of the study showed that the students of SMK PGRI Pontianak had higher intrinsic motivation than extrinsic motivation in learning English or other words, the motivation within students was greater than the motivation that comes from outside the students. From this study the researcher also have suggestion for students to enjoy all subjects by looking for the benefits of the lesson, so that it will lead to self-learning motivation (intrinsic).
